10:40pm.  The phone rings.  "Hello?"  Recorded voice says "This. call. is. from.
an. in.mate. at. the. San. Fran.cis.co. coun.ty. ja.il."  Thought: Huh.  I
wonder who got busted.  That's awesome that they're calling me.  Wow, I feel
special.  Voice: sounds like "Xep??"  "Hello?  Hi! Yeah?"  "Oh man, I just
finally remembered your number."  The voice isn't familiar.  "Who are you
looking for?"  "Is this Tiffany?"  "No, sorry, man, it's not."  "DAMN!"  *click*

The thing is, "xep" sounds a like "'sup?" or "yes?"  or anything else, really,
except "Ernest".  But even with a little stretch of the imagination you could
make that work in your head.

watching you watch me.  you watching me watch you.  silent connections.  
reaching out across the wires.  pendleton open his mouth and no sound comes
out.
